A warm welcome!

The Department of Theology and History of the Eastern Churches deals in research and teaching with:

  • Eastern Orthodox Churches
  • Eastern Catholic Churches
  • Oriental Orthodox Churches
  • Patristics

The chair is a part of a well-established research tradition at the University of Vienna. Eastern Orthodox canon law has been a field of research at the Faculty of Law since 1867, and Eastern Christian Studies and Patristics has been a separate subject at the Faculty of Catholic Theology since 1975.

Vienna has played a leading role in ecumenical contacts due to the long history of the Eastern Churches in Austria, and the chair has a unique position in Europe within the field of Eastern Christian Studies. The field is especially important in view of European integration and identity as well as recent geopolitical developments.
